Carlo Scarpa

Carlo Scarpa

Carlo Scarpa (Venice, 2 June 1906 - Sendai, 28 November 1978).

One of the lesser-known - but no less significant - aspects of the design activity of Carlo Scarpa, a popular Italian architect and designer, was his work as artistic director at some of the most prestigious Murano glass companies, such as Cappellini and Venini. Indeed, at the Venini Scarpa, in the mid-1930s, he began designing the first glasses in which he tied traditional Murano techniques, such as filigree and murrine, to very simple geometric shapes, giving life to unique specimens like the small green cup. At the Venice Biennial of 1940, an entire room was dedicated to the glass designed by Scarpa, whose influence would affect also Venini’s production.
